Absrtact: This paper presents a low-power architecture of reconfigurable discrete cosine transform (DCT) based on CORDIC. The main idea of this paper is based on the interesting fact that DCT does not produce the output of frequency equally important domain in all calculations. Considering the significant difference in DCT coefficients, the number of iterations of CORDIC algorithm can be dynamically changed to effectively compromise the image quality power consumption. Therefore, the calculated energy does not seriously affect the image quality. The proposed CORDIC structure based on 2-D DCT is implemented using 0.13 μ m CMOS process, and the experimental results show that our reconfigurable DCT can save power from 22.9% to 52.2%, which is lower than CORDIC based LV DCT in the cost of slight image quality degradation. Key words: coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC), data priority, discrete cosine transform (DCT), low power consumption, reconfigurable architecture.
