Zernike moment is an orthogonalization function based on Zernike polynomials. The set of orthogonal polynomials is a complete orthogonal set in the unit circle. When calculating the Zernike moment of an image, the pixel coordinates are mapped to the unit circle with the centroid of the image (also known as the center of gravity) as the origin. Zernike moment is a complex moment. Generally, the module of Zernike moment is used as a feature to describe the shape of an object. The shape feature of an object can be well represented by a set of small Zernike moment eigenvectors. The low order moment eigenvector describes the overall shape of an image object, and the high order moment eigenvector describes the details of the image object.
