Comparison between serial and parallel computing
no vote
Visiting the neighborhood PC retail store provides ample evidence that we are in the multi-core era. The key difference between vendors today is the number of cores they pack into a single chip. The clock frequency of commercial processors has reached its limit, however, and is likely to remain below 4 GHz for many years. Therefore, adding a kernel is synonymous with not increasing computing power. In order to take full advantage of the performance enhancement of the new multi-core hardware, the corresponding adjustment must take place in the software infrastructure -- the transformation to parallel computing.
