This project will allow a real time Google maps mash-up to an SQL database of delivery vehicles, updated in real time through the driver's GPS capable cell phones.
Today a cell phone is carried by most of the delivery drivers. These are usually used in the press to talk mode that simulates a old style two way radio. There are push to talk phones available with GPS features. The only other feature required is a data plan so that the java code on the phone can periodically update the position using the web service.
A web page provides a Google mash-up of the position of each vehicle. Ancillary information could be included in the pop-up window when the mouse cursor is hovered over the position marker.
The web service allows java code on the cell phone to update it's position periodically (once per minute?). This would be a relatively simple write only service. A URL using a get could be used like this.
myservice.php?radio=123&longitude=123.934
