<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"">Passports and other identification documents may beenhanced using recent advancements in technology. Various national andinternational bodies are pursuing machine-readable approaches with biometricinformation. In particular, the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) has adopted standards whereby passports can store biometric identifiers.Countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) began issuingelectronic passports in 2006. However, the selection of technologies remainsquestionable due to privacy and security concerns. This paper examines policyregarding these electronic approaches and developments toward electronic datastorage and transmission. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) devices forelectronic passports and other existing identity documents are discussed

This document describes the Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) VHDL component which can be used either with the PmodRS232 or with an on-board RS232 port. A UART component is used to convert serial data to parallel data, and parallel data to serial data. The serial data transferred into the UART is placed on an output bus after the UART converts it into parallel information. This bus can then be used as input to other logic in the gate array. The resulting data can then be sent back out serially by using the UART component again.
